Everybody has a story to tell. If you're reading this page, you're ready to tell yours.
I've self-published six books from the ground up. I've written coverage for hundreds of screenplays in Hollywood. I live, eat, and breathe words all day, every day.
There are thousands of how-to books that will instruct you on the details of the writing process; description, punctuation, dialogue, grammar, etc. etc. etc. But if you need help with the big picture—if you need to get words on the page in a way that will hook your readers—I can do what books can't.
I will read a 1-3 page synopsis of your future book and provide 2-3 pages of detailed notes. Notes will include structure help, suggestions for new scenes, thoughts on character arcs, and my overall impressions of your story.
I will read one chapter of your manuscript and provide 1-2 pages of detailed notes. Notes include suggestions on the writing, thoughts on character, and answers to any questions you have regarding your chapter. (I don't do line editing, but I will make general notes about spelling and grammar if applicable.)
We can discuss your current project for one hour over the phone. You determine the topics and direction of the conversation. This would be best if you have a general idea for a story and need feedback before picking up the pen.
We will discuss your current project over the phone once a week for a month. I'll take notes during each session so our dialogue can continue seamlessly from week to week. This is best for writers already knee-deep in a project and could be used as an accountability program in addition to a writing workshop.
Ten emails back-and-forth over any length of time; pick my brain, ask questions about writing, or delve into fears about your project. This option is best if you need long-term help and prefer email over the phone.
If you'd like to get a sense of my style and priorities before committing to a session, check out my free ebook about writing on Amazon or by subscribing to my newsletter. (If you'd rather not use Amazon or subscribe, shoot me an email and I'll send you a free PDF.)
"For quite a while I've been utterly stumped in my writing and felt that giving up was the only solution. I had read hundreds of writing books and got to the point where I felt there was nothing more to read. Talking for an hour with Jake showed me the way. He talked me through my ideas in such simple and direct terms and it flipped a switch in my mind. For the next few days I used his advice and the writing flowed. I expect to use his techniques for the rest of my life." -Adam B Schwartz, WFIU-WTIU Public Broadcasting
